The Canon SD90IS is a new point and shoot camera from Canon. It has all the features an amateur photographer could want or need, including large resolution, a decent sized display and high ISO capabilities. It is also good for professionals that just want a camera they can grab and go.
This camera has a resolution of ten megapixels, rivaling the DSLRs of a few years ago and has a 3.0 inch LCD screen. This means you can get higher quality, larger images. 10 megapixels can print slightly bigger than an 8x10 inch photograph at 300 pixels per inch, which is the typical resolution for a high-quality photograph. The LCD screen is large enough to review photos easily and it makes taking pictures easier. 3 inches is about as large as many view screens on DSLRs as well. It is also a great size to show off recently taken photos.
It uses a lithium battery that can be recharged with the included charger. Though this does mean, most people will want to buy a spare battery just in case, but this also saves money on constantly buying regular batteries. It is also convenient as the photographer only has to carry two slim batteries as opposed to multiple regular batteries.
The camera has a 3.8x wide angle optical zoom lens with image stabilization. Image stabilization is a great tool for shooting in low-light situations or photographing a moving subject. This lens is equivalent 28 - 105mm and is perfect for many typical situations, such as landscapes and travel photos.
It also has a maximum ISO of 12,800 and an aperture as low as 2.0. ISO means the same thing in digital photography as it did with film: the higher the ISO, the faster the camera can shoot. This means the camera needs less light to take clear, detailed images. An aperture of 2.0 also helps in shooting low light situations as it allows the lens to open wider to let in more light. Also, allowing the aperture to open wider allows for a shallow depth of field, great for portraits to draw attention to a subject.
The serious photographer can choose between photographing JPEGs or RAW files. Most will choose JPEG as it is the common file type and works well for basic editing and processing. However RAW is useful for those that intend to spend a lot of time editing and processing the images on their computers and want a little more control over this. RAW files are also not compressed like JPEGs.
As with all Canon cameras, the SD90IS comes with one battery, charger, a neck strap, Digital Camera Solution CD-ROM, USB cord, and A/V cord so the photographer can upload the photos or show them off on a larger screen
The Canon SD90IS is a great camera for both the serious amateur and the professional that is looking for a good point-and-shoot. It has a high resolution, fast lens, and high ISO capabilities, making it great for low-light situations and moving subjects. With a $430 price tag, this camera may not fit in all budgets, but does come with many features that make it worth the price.
