Canon EOS Rebel T2i DSLR - The Best HD Video DSLR

Bookmark and Share

Traditionally, Digital SLR or DSLR cameras have always offered better shots or still images and only recently included the ability to record video. While many of last year's DSLRs could capture video, it wasn't very good video. However, even more recently, a number of DSLRs have taken the plunge in offering HD video recording but usually until 720p HD video and only for higher-end DSLRs. The Canon EOS Rebel T2i is one of the exceptions to this trend in that it not only offers professional-class 1080p HD video at 30 frames per second but it is also being offered at a lower mid-range price.

In terms of design, the Canon EOS Rebel T2i doesn't stray too far from the familiar compact DSLR shape and design. While it isn't as large as the higher-end grips, the grip is still quite comfortable with a good amount of heft at 1.6lbs. As expected of such a DSLR the color is still the standard black but the controls have been simplified somewhat to that of a point-and-shoot with its directional buttons. The 3-inch LCD screen is quite sharp while the Canon user interface is the same as any other Canon DSLR, although there is a more beginner-friendly Auto mode as well.

The Canon EOS Rebel T2i uses an APS-C 18MP image sensor, which gives it plenty of power and great image quality. However the larger size slows down continuous shooting mode to 3.7 frames per second (fps). Image quality is top notch with great ISO all the way up to 6400 but expect some noticeable noise when going that high. The HD video on the other hand is just awesome, taking 1080p at 30fps, 1080p at 24fps and 720p at 60fps with ease. Colors and video quality are professional class but the built-in microphone often picks up shutter noise while the auto-focus is a bit slow. The camera can write to SD and SDHC cards and even comes with mini-HDMI and mini-USB ports for direct connections.

Overall, the Canon EOS Rebel T2i is an awesome all-in-one DSLR for the digital image and video performance user on a budget. Its great video performance outshines most camcorders while its very good image performance delivers quality and performance on par with more expensive higher-end models. Features and controls may not be as many as though, but the DSLR's excellent performance balances this out well.
