As for as best brands go when it comes to digital cameras, there will be always be lots of controversy. Generally, the three well known brands are Kodak, Canon, and Sony. Sony is generally the "Nike" of cameras, though for many, the brand name is it's best feature. As for actual quality and performance, many people prefer Kodak, Sony, Canon, or Nikon.
Picking between a Kodak and Canon camera depends mostly on what the camera will be used for. For taking pictures outdoors and for sporting events, Canon is considered one of the best. For stage and theature photography, Kodak is much better. Statistically, there are more Kodak's bought every year, yet professionals tend to go with the Canons.
Many more of the "pros" tend to use the Canon, in comparison to the Kodak. Many agree that Canon cameras have a wider variety of options. Additionally, you can get an older model for pretty cheap, and it will generally be of higher quality than other brand name new cameras.
Now statistically, Canon is proven to be the best brand for cameras. On Amazon, they claim that Canon has created 18 of the best 25 top selling cameras (on the best seller list). Within the top ten, Canon holds 9 spots. Some of the most popular specific Canon cameras include the PowerShot A570IS, the PowerShot SD1000, and the PowerShot SD850. In the top 25, Nikon, Panasonic, Kodak, and Sony also occupy a few spots, though no other brand comes close to Canons record
Sony does offer a few very good cameras, though generally its "lower end" cameras. This is unlike Canon and Nikon, where even their lower end cameras are considered to be very good. Sony cameras generally give you no where near the options you have with camera brands such a Canon and Kodak. Though Sony's name is very popular, it's cameras are not quite in contention.
Generally, choosing a brand of camera really comes down to the buyer's preference. Then again, do not pick something just for its name. I have seen many people pick Sony Cameras for its name. Do a bit more research before investing. You will find that Canon is probably the best camera, and is better than many Sony's you will find on the shelf in stores.
