If you are the proud owner of a Canon Rebel T3i or one of the previous versions of rebels, there is not much doubt that will be called to take a portrait or two. Or perhaps portraits are the type of images because they specialize in and people come to you all the time. What objective Canon Rebel portrait choose? Let's get one thing out of the way first. A rebel from Canon is capable of taking great shots, whether portraits or otherwise. Actually you don't need a camera for $5000 to perform super portraits. Sure, it would be nice, but it is simply not necessary.
As you may be aware, EF-S lenses are specifically made for cameras Canon such as the series of rebel. But EF models also work, in fact, any lens that makes Canon will work in the T3i. Also, lenses from other manufacturers for Canon cameras work in its rebel, too... all of them!
So the options are not limited. But the decision more complicated only because of the numbers of distortion.
There are a couple of things you want to find in a portrait lens.
Firstly, a lens with a focal distance medium telephoto is perfect. For a rebel, it may mean something between 50 mm and 100 mm. don't forget, 1.6 x crop factor means that you have to multiply the focal length times 1.6 for the equivalent value of 35 mm. Simple mathematics shows that 50 mm acts as a T3i 85 mm, and 100 mm is as 160 mm.
Secondly, you are the most wide open you can get. Nothing to f/2.8 or wider is perfect. The reason for the wide opening is the blurry background paired with a sharp focus on the subject. It's narrow depth of field, which is much easier with a wide opening.
Thirdly, look for a single focal distance, as 50, 85 or 100 mm. While this is not a requirement which is absolutely necessary, lenses in these focal distances have shown to be up to the task of achieving clarity ends with excellent depth of field.
There are some excellent lenses that have these requirements nailed, and the price is right, as well. It could even consider the use of a macro or close, lens to double as a shooter of "persons".
