Canon Rebel T2i Vs Nikon D700 - Which One?

Bookmark and Share

Here it is again... Canon vs. Nikon. But this time we are comparing to mid range digital SLR, the Nikon D700, with an entry level model, the Canon Rebel T2i.

This is really a weird comparison. It is not "apples to apples". After all, these two cameras are usually purchased by different interest groups. Nikon D700 buyers are usually either professional or advanced amateur, while Canon Rebel T2i buyers would seem to be more in the "beginner" category. But that is exactly the reason for this comparison. The new Rebel is finding its way into the hands of some serious photographers. And reviews are showing that the Rebel 550D (that's an AKA) does indeed compare to much more advanced cameras than its now.

The issues here will be in image quality, build camera, video, and, of course, price.

Image Quality. The first and foremost thing to photographer will want out of any camera is great pictures. Both of these digital marvels deliver in this category. There are two different types of sensors: the less expensive Canon sensor is of the APS-C variety, while the more expensive Nikon is a Full Frame sensor. That alone should weigh heavily in favor of Full Frame. But, unless you are one of the review geeks who blows images up to the size of an aircraft carrier to examine the pixel quality, you will have to admit that the image quality is similar. The Nikon D700 will win the low light battle, but the Canon Rebel T2i keeps up at least to ISO 3200, which is very impressive. The T2i sensor is 18 megapixels vs 12 for the D700, meaning that you could conceivably print much larger images from the T2i. However, if you are planning to print anything close to normal size (meaning up to 36 "prints), either model will deliver the goods.

With regard to camera build, you will notice a BIG difference in the way each camera feels in your hand. The Canon T2i feels like a toy compared to the Nikon D700. For some, the lighter feel is good, but for others, the extra weight is the feel of "professional". That being said, the T2i does not actually feel like a toy if you are not holding to D700 in the other hand. And you can increase the "professional" feel by adding a battery grip. In all fairness, though, the Nikon D700 is built to last and it is really well engineered.

OK, let's take a shot at video. The Canon T2i is receiving accolades for its video capture quality. Not only has quality improved in video capture, sound has been improved dramatically as well. You can capture video at 1080p and 30 frames per second with stereo sound. An external mic jack has been added to enhance this feature even more. Nikon D700 has a ways to go to duplicate the video quality of its competitor in this review... Actually, there is no video. But if you want a great digital SLR without video...

Finally, price. How about under $1000 for the Canon Rebel vs about $2400 for the Nikon. That's simple enough. You do the math.

Why even compare these cameras? It's just an exercise in ridiculous discussions that have been taking place in the photographic community. The Nikon -Canon debate will continue as long as both exist. These companies literally dominate the sales at online stores such as Amazon. The top ten selling digital SLRs are all made by these two manufacturers.

Can I add one more comparison? User ratings. Check the user ratings at dpreview.com, B & H Camera, or amazon and you will see that both cameras are at the top of the heap in customer satisfaction. Your job as a buyer is to click the "Add to Cart" button and get to the important part - taking great photos.
