Bookmark and Share

Digital cameras come in all shapes and sizes. What is right for you? Would you like to slip into a pocket or would prefer something bigger with a wide range of features.? Decide which type is right for you is the first step on the way to the choice of the perfect digital camera.

I have divided the types of digital cameras available in six different categories.

Simple Point and Shoot

These are the most basic and easy to use digital camera. They are also the cheapest. Start with this type of digital camera, you really need to do is charge the battery and memory card. Once it has fact is simply a case of turning on the camera and take a picture.

The disadvantages of this type of camera are often small screens LCD, quick use of batteries, low quality and shutter delay

Suggested cameras: Canon Powershot A430, Sony DSC S600 and Panasonic DMC LS2.

High quality Point and Shoot

The first thing is remarkable with this type of camera digital is a big step up in the quality of construction and a very elegant design. In terms of features you can have no more than a simple point and shoot model. Image quality is usually an improvement in most basic cameras. This type of camera is still easy to use.

These cameras tend to be considerably more expensive than the simple point and shoot models.

Suggested cameras: Canon Powershot SD700 IS (European name: IXUS 800 IS), Casio Exilim EX-Z850 and Panasonic DMC FX01.

Point and shoot with Extra functions

Quality of design and construction that these cameras tend to resemble the simple point and shoot models with one or two improvements such as larger LCD displays. They offer manual exposure features that tend to appeal to people who are more serious about their photography. These cameras also maintained a very compact size.

Suggested cameras: Canon Powershot A700, Canon Powershot A610 and Sony DSC W100.

Pocket

Pocket digital cameras tend to be more or less thin versions of the high quality and models of firing point. This is the most convenient type of digital camera, as it is easy to slip into a pocket and take with you.

In terms of image quality not often be quite as good as any high quality point and shoot models or the point and shoot cameras features extra.

Suggested cameras: Canon Powershot SD600 (European name: IXUS 60), Sony DSC T9 and Sony DSC T30.

Super Zoom

Super zoom digital cameras are quite different. These are cameras that are larger with similar characteristics to them you would expect to find in a traditional 35 mm SLR camera. In terms of style and design they also have a resemblance to these cameras too. These are more directed to people who are serious about photography. The longest zoom can make them much heavier than the smaller covenants.

Obviously, these cameras are too large for a pocket for what you need to consider how you will carry them around with you. A good quality camera bag is well worth considering.

Suggested cameras: Canon Powershot S3 IS, Sony DSC H2, Fuji Finepix S9000 (European name: S9500) and Fuji Finepix S5200 (European name: S5600).

Camera digital SLR

If you are looking for the best quality and also a high degree of flexibility is likely to find digital SLR cameras quite tempting. Prices have fallen dramatically in the last years of the couple making them affordable to photography enthusiasts and professionals. Once you add in the cost of a pair of high quality lenses buying one is still a significant investment. Therefore, I only suggest buying one if they are serious about photography or intend to spend much time getting to know the camera.

Suggests entry-level digital SLR cameras: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT (European name: EOS 350 d) and Nikon D50
