A very quick look at the specifications for these two compact cameras of Pocket shows that they are almost identical. These are some of the similarities:
Size: 3.4 "wide by 2.2" signup for "deep" 0.7
LCD: 2.5 "with resolution of 230,000 pixels"
Zoom: 3 x with very similar focal equivalents
Image quality: both are excellent for compact pocket cameras
Opening: not exactly equal but not it is enough difference to make a case one way or another
ISO range: auto or 80-1600
White Balance selection: 6 positions and programming manual
Image processor: Canon Digic 4
The differences are only in megapixels and video capabilities. Canon PowerShot SD780 IS is an image sensor of a whopping 12 megapixels, while the Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS has an only a 10 megapixel image sensor. If you're a vigilant megapixels, this may be enough to go to the SD780 IS, but it is not really enough difference to base its final decision in.
The biggest difference is in the video capture function. Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS has decent video with ability to capture video in 640 x 480 at 30 fps (frames per second), which is similar to the previous pocket cameras. However, the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS has the ability to capture HD video at 1280 x 720 pixels and 30 fps. This is the same capacity video and format as some higher end cameras.
Therefore, if you want to be able to show your camera Pocket video on your HD TV with excellent quality, the Canon PowerShot SD780 IS is the camera for you. The additional $40 well worth the upgrade in video.
If the video is not theirs, by all means, save $40 and get the Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS. The quality of image for photos is still practically identical. Use the money you save to get a memory card for your new family pocket camera. (By the way, will have to spring for the memory card with the SD780 too, in order to record this video great.)
It is always a good idea to investigate the purchase before you buy. Not just walk into your favorite discount store and pick up the prettiest of the shelf camera because its design will impress your friends. There are some great digital compact cameras that are offered. But that is not the case for every camera. Verify that the ratings of the camera review sites and online stores where those who actually bought cameras are publishing their assessments. Some of these reviews convince one way or another about the camera they are considering.
Of course you should always check http://www.digital-photographic-resources.com before making any decision to House. Happy shooting!
